Switzerland

The leading Swiss resort of Zermatt is reported to be leading a group of Swiss resorts considering funding an indoor snow centre in one of the country’s major metropolitan areas to try to boost the numbers of skiers and boarders entering the sport, reported to be declining at a rate of ten percent per year.

Indoor snow centres are reported to be each introducing as many as 100,000 new skiers and boarders to wintersports each year.

A budget of 70 million Swiss Francs has been proposed for the project, which envisages a 300m long slope.  According to website Swissinfo, some critics have suggested that the money would be better spent promoting Swiss ski resorts in existing indoor snow centres in Germany and Holland.

However supporters of the project, who recently toured German facilities, said that they particularly wanted to target the declining Swiss domestic market which typically makes up two thirds of visitors to Swiss resorts.   They also noted that most existing halls were owned or heavily sponsored by Austrian ski resorts and regions.

Snow World, Landgraaf, Netherlands

The World Indoor Snowkayak Championships were staged at Holland’s Landgraff Indoor Ski Centre near The Hague, on March 31st and April 1st 2007

The little known sport of Snowkayaking is little more than a year old and centred on the Dutch market.  It involves descending a snow covered slope indoors or outdoors.  The World Championship events included freestyle and ‘Boater Cross.”

Boater X has a familiar format for those who follow boarder X or skier X events.   Every heat has four participants battling to get to the next round. After the start signal all four go down the 520m long especially prepared slope as fast as they can. Everything is allowed during the descent except hitting each other with the paddles. The first two crossing the finishline will be racing again against the first two from a different heat. This will eventually lead to a winner, the world champion!

“Snowkayaking is just advanced sledge-riding, anyone can do it! All nationalities are most welcome.” Said the organisers.

The minimum age for participation is 14, helmets, a lifejacket or body protection must be worn and kayaks must be unmodified models up to a maximum length of three metres.  Otherwise, anything goes.

Alpine Canada Alpin Chief Athletics Officer, Max Gartner said that the greatest advantage for the Canadian development women was the ability to train on stable snow and in consistent weather conditions.

“It’s good to know ahead of time that you will be guaranteed optimal training and be able to maximize each and every day of the camp with no worries of a bad weather day," said Gartner. “The air temperature is kept at 4 degrees (C), the artificial light is very good, and the 25-35 cm artificial snow base is hard packed and ideal for slalom training. The women’s development team is very fortunate to train here along side numerous alpine ski teams on the circuit, including those from Japan, Germany, USA, Italy, and Austria.”
